Why Patients From Maine Travel to Lahey

Maine has limited fellowship-trained reconstructive urology coverage — most complex urethroplasty, post-radiation reconstruction, and male incontinence revision is referred out of state. Lahey is the closest high-volume reconstructive center for the majority of Maine residents. Patients from across the state, including Aroostook County and Downeast Maine, travel to Burlington for procedures their referring urologists do not perform locally.

Travel Times From Major Maine Locations

All times are non-rush-hour estimates and exclude greater Boston commute traffic. Allow additional time for weekday morning and evening drives through the Boston metro area.

Common Referring Institutions in Maine

Patients are referred to Dr. Vanni from urologists and primary care physicians at:

Self-referrals (without a referring physician) are also accepted for most commercial insurance plans, but check with your insurance about whether a referral is required.

Frequently Asked Questions From Maine Patients

I live in northern Maine — can I do most of my workup locally before traveling?

Yes, and Dr. Vanni encourages this. Your referring urologist can perform the initial workup — cystoscopy, retrograde urethrogram, uroflow, post-void residual — and forward the results. This typically reduces the number of trips to Lahey to one preoperative visit and the surgery itself, with follow-up imaging often done locally and forwarded back.

How does the long drive affect post-operative recovery?

Most patients are kept in the hospital one to two nights and discharged home with a catheter. Lying in the back seat with a urine drainage bag on the floor is the most comfortable position for the drive home. Patients from Bangor and farther north sometimes stay locally one additional night before driving back. The office can advise based on your specific procedure.

Will MaineCare or my Maine commercial insurance cover Lahey?

MaineCare typically requires an out-of-state authorization that your referring physician's office can submit. Maine commercial plans (Anthem BCBS of Maine, Harvard Pilgrim, Aetna, Cigna) generally include Lahey in their networks. Confirm with your specific plan.

Can my follow-up imaging be done in Maine?

Yes. Cystograms, voiding cystourethrograms, uroflow, and post-void residuals can be performed at your local hospital or imaging center and forwarded to Dr. Vanni's office for review. This significantly reduces travel for long-distance Maine patients.
